  1. I would like to segest the topic of the cold war and nuclear proliferation. How dangerous nuclear weapons really are and how humanity is really on a knife edge. A good film to portray this topic would be Crimson Tide (1995).
Something to discus would be how nuclear submarines are nearly undetectable and how one U.S. Ohio class submarine carries enough fire power to level 288 cities at a range of 6,000 miles.

  2. This year one topic we discussed was "Sports in America", it was very interesting and inspiring. However, I believe that the racial difficulties African Americans had trying to play sports in America should be included. This is a very un-talked about subject. Not that long ago in America no African Americans were allowed to play college sports let alone professional sports. It was not until 1915 that African Americans were allowed to play in the NCAA. A movie that demonstrates this subject is, The Express (2010). This is the Ernie Davis story, a very forgotten person in America. Ernie Davis paved the way for many African American athletes and was the first African American to ever win the Heisman trophy (highest award one can get in college football). This movie expresses how important sports are in American and also glorifies the racism going on at the time. Ernie Davis, Jim Brown, Jackie Robinson and Floyd Little did a lot without saying anything, and I believe the legacy they left behind should be honored when talking about sports in America.

  3. Thus far, the war in the middle- east has been the primary war of our generation. This is the main reason why a topic should be centered on this subject. There is already a lot of history regarding this war, but I believe 9/11 is the most infamous. A great movie to portray the events of this day is United 93, a movie telling the story of United 93 passengers who rebelled against terrorists that hijacked the plane. A possible topic question would be, if you were on the plane that was being hijacked, what would you do? Another question could be, do you believe in what the United States have done post 9/11 regarding new laws?

  4. I think a good topic to discuss next year would be Women's Suffrage and the obstacles women had to face to be able to earn the right to vote. One of my favorite movies is Iron Jawed Angels (2004) which depicts the hardships of Alice Paul and the National Women's Party (NWP) as they fight to get voting rights for women. She was jailed fro "obstructing traffic" and while in jail she continued that fight even while she was being force fed. It was not easy for Alice Paul and the NWP to fight for the right because it was at a time of war and Since Presidents Roosevelt passed the 19th Amendment and granted women right to vote, American has progressed in a positive direction in regards to women. The topic question could be, Why did it take so long to give women the right to vote? It really did take a long time for such a simple idea to be accepted into society. This is a pivotal topic in the making of our country and this is a very good and accurate movie on Women's Suffrage.

  5. I think a great topic would be the true horrors of slavery. The movie "Django Unchained" directed by Quentin Tarantino, although considered historical fiction, displays the terrible treatment of African Americans in the 1850's before the civil war. The movie is about an ex-slave who joins forces with a bounty hunter to kill white, slave owning criminals in an effort to save his enslaved wife. This action packed thriller is full of racism and displays Django, a black man, who is viewed as special because he is allowed to speak to white man and ride a horse, which is unheard of for a black man to do. "Django Unchained" has several scenes showing the cruelty of slavery and the types of torture slave owners used on their slaves including whipping, the "hot box" treatment and many other forms of brutality. In the end of the movie Django prevails and is reunited with his wife. I believe this film is a good depiction of slave brutality and that the students of topics would benefit from watching this movie.

  6. I think a great topic should discuss next year's class should discuss is violence in urban area's. I think a lot of kids are not exposed to this subject and haven't really saw it so they should get a taste of it. It would also be great to see what an area of the state is looking like and what is the government doing to help. People can watch Juice, New Jack city, Paid in Full (my favorite movie), or get rich or die trying. This would also give insight on what it may be like to raise kids in a inner city, so a great movie to pick would be hardball. hardball is a baseball movie with inner city kids trying to stay away from gang violence.

  7. I believe that the topic of music and its effect on American History would be a very powerful topic to do in class. There are many events in history that involve music including famous wars and other hardships that have occurred in our history. Music has helped people get through hard times and has also been a very important part of our history. The movie Good Morning Vietnam would be perfect for this topic because it involves the Vietnam war and how music helped the soldiers get through the hardships. Robin Williams plays the DJ and it is a very inspirational heart warming film.

  8. I think that students would enjoy watching the movie, “A league of Their Own” directed by Penny Marshall. This dramatic comedy is placed during World War II when only men were fighting. There is a baseball league that only men played in until the baseball teams owners wanted to stop from keeping baseball a dominant sport for men. Each of the scouts went around the world looking for women players that were married to men in war. It is about two small town sisters that end up making it to the league. It is both an exciting and emotional movie. It still brings World War II into the movie, showing the difficulty for these wife’s worrying about there husbands in war and getting a call that there husband is gone. Which is very important but it also brings comedy into it to lighten the mood. It is easy to relate because a lot of people like watching baseball. I hope this is one of your topics in a year to come because I love this movie!

  9. I believe that the locating and killing of Osama Bin Laden, also known as OBL, is a topic that must be covered in next year’s topics class. With Osama Bin Laden’s role in 9/11 and being the (Ex) leader of Al-Qaeda he is worthy of being place on next year curriculum. The movie Zero Dark Thirty is a excellent portrayal of the actual events that lead up to the assassination of OBL. It shows how much effort the CIA and all U.S military put towards this manhunt. The main character, Maya, who was recruited to the CIA straight out of high school, spent most of her adult life toward capturing OBL. This movie really is “the story of history's greatest manhunt for the world's most dangerous man"

  10. This year we talked a lot about sports and unequal rights in Topics of American history. I believe the perfect way to bring those both together is to show the movie 42 which is a 2013 biographical sports film written and directed by Brian Helgeland about the life of the great Jackie Robinson. The movie shows the trail and tribulation Jackie Robinson went through that would change society's view for forever.

  11. I would like to suggest the topic of mental disorders, specifically the topic of Autism. In our society, we do not only cater to the young and healthy. We must also include our other members of the community; the mentally disabled. After all, if we discounted them we would have to discount Albert Einstein as well. The move is suggest is Rain Man (1988).
