What is the Topic you wish to write about for your 5 to 7 page paper? This is due Monday January, 12 before your class period. Please pick a topic that you really love and wish to investigate for then you will enjoy this project.
Woodstock, the 1969 music festival advertised as “3 days of peace and music,” was listed in Rolling Stone magazine’s top 50 Moments that Changed the History of Rock and Roll. Nearly 1 million people flocked to Bethel, New York for the festival, and only about 500,000 got inside. The festival is most famous for it’s performances by psychedelic bands and artists including Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Joe Cocker, Santana, and Jefferson Airplane. Originally, the festival was planned for a crowd of 50,000, and then it was estimated that 200,000 would show up. This is why the half a million people in attendance, meaning 300,000 not having been planned for, was such a great deal given the overall success of the festival. For my term paper, I plan to write about how Woodstock represented the general culture of the generation during it’s time, and how it changed music’s course through history.
For my research paper I would like to write about the dangers and consequences that today’s collegiate sororities and fraternities impose upon their members during the initiation process and beyond. For many high school students the idea of becoming a brother or sister in these century-old greek organizations seems to be the pinnacle of the American dream, the very definition of success and acceptance in college life. The image of fraternities and sororities is on the surface clouded by the grandeur and glory that is often viewed as a direct result of joining these groups. This notion is not difficult to understand- immediate acceptance and friends, creating lasting connections with currently or potentially influential people, or even reaching the level of success that former fraternity or sorority members such as George W Bush or Stephen Spielberg have reached. All of these seem to be incredibly desirable results, but at what price are these achievements earned? The reality of sororities and fraternities is much less glamorous. There have been 60 deaths as a result of fraternity or sorority hazing in America since 2005 and since 1970 there has been at least one hazing-related death in college each year. First-year fraternity brothers have significantly lower reading comprehension skills than their non-affiliated peers at the end of their freshman year. Studies have found that fraternity brothers are 3 times more likely to rape, and sorority sisters are 74% more likely to experience rape. The induction process often involves dangerous amounts of alcohol, physical violence and humiliation. With these terrifying statistics, what progress is being made? what action is being taken by schools and students? How have schools allowed these organizations operate the way they do for so long without making a drastic change? In my research paper, I would like to explore these questions as well and the specific ways in which fraternities and sororities use their power to influence and affect their members. -Caroline Skinner
For my paper I want to write about the food progression in the United States. I will begin with the food Native Americans used and how they prepared it. When the English colonists came to America they brought their English cuisine with them. Different regions of the States had different food availability. African Americans also inspired the American cuisine. I will talk about different cooking methods used then and now and the common ingredients that were used. I will explain which ingredients are native to America and which had to be imported. I then will explain what foods America came up with and which countries or people inspired these particular dishes. Lastly, I will talk about modern cuisine and how much it has changed from the food Native Americans were eating when the colonists first arrived to America. -Ali Duryea
For my research paper I want to analyze the topic of School Shootings. Why is America the only country that has had school shootings? I want to explore the details of the Columbine High School massacre, Newtown, etc. This relates to the issue of gun control in our government which has been a extreme conflict among people in recent years. The topic of school shootings also is a new development in our generation. School shootings were so rare before the 21st century, why all the sudden has there been an interest to harm young student's lives? There is a debate where mental illness is a factor of the shooters minds, and I want to explore the correlation between depression and mental illness that can cause such rage for one to do such a thing. This is an issue that has become increasingly relevant in our society, and I think it needs to be addressed. -Hanna Derrig
The Miracle on Ice was one of the greatest moments in sports history. Almost everyone knows the story of how the 1980 U.S Olympic hockey team, comprised of mostly collegiate hockey players, beat the four-time defending gold medal Soviet team, 4-3. Most people today believe this is the typical underdog story, but it meant much more to the United States then. At the time, the U.S was in the midst of the Cold War with the Soviet Union. America was facing a recession, the Iran hostage crisis, and the Soviet Union had just invaded Afghanistan. Morale was very low in the U.S., so this game provided them with something to celebrate. Also, it was a psychological win in the Cold War for the U.S. For my term paper, I am going to investigate the effects of the Miracle on Ice on the Cold War. - Kate Klimaszewski
For my research paper, I would like to study the development of war planes in the fighter category. I will study the fighter jet category from World War I to modern day. Their jobs in wars and the specific missions they would fly on will help me explain what they are and how large of an impact they make on war. Specific contributions they have brought to the U.S. and other advances in the field of science will also be an important part of my research. I will look heavily into jet engines and their very important contribution to fighter planes. Inside the field of jet engines there are many generations of fighter jets. The civilian application of this invention is massive and without it our travel wouldn't be so advanced. The field I will be studying isn't going to be specific to the United States. For example, during the World War I and World War II era, I will look heavily into German, British, and U.S. aircraft. From being around airplanes a lot, I will be able to apply this knowledge in my research and show the impact on history these planes have made.
For my research paper I would like to talk about why NHL teams have failed In certain city's. Over the history of the NHL there have been many teams that have been dropped out of the league or relocated to a different area. My plan is to look into these citys and figure out why they failed. Also to go along with why NHL teams fail I am going to talk about what makes certain NHL teams so successful and study teams like the Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, LA King etc. To finish off I plan to write about a on a city that does not have an NHL team that in my opinion would be a good place for hockey like for example, Las Vegas, Seattle and Quebec city.
For my research paper I would like to investigate what happens to soldiers when they return home from war. A recent study took place in the past year showing that almost 50% of war veterans have been diagnosed with PTSD once removed from combat. How has PTSD diagnoses increased over the years? How many soldiers are seeking professional help and what is the course of treatment? In addition, I would also like to talk about war veterans who are homeless or who are living on the brink of homelessness. The Department of Veterans Affairs tries their hardest to support as many people as possible, however not everyone can be helped. In 2010, an estimated number of 76,000 veterans were sleeping on the streets all across the United States. Have any other organizations reached out to support these issues? If so, what have been the results? For my research paper I will investigate these questions and find further knowledge on what it is like for a soldier to return home from war. -Emily Walsh
In my research paper, I would like to talk about the fight fought by women to receive equal rights and specifically the ability to vote. Through this struggle for women’s suffrage many distinctive women became leaders and pioneers in the strive for equality; one particular trailblazer was Alice Paul. In my paper I would investigate her actions and passion to gain the right to vote for women. I would like to reference the movie Iron-Jawed- Angles which is a historic account of Mrs. Paul’s story. Using Alice Paul I would discuss how the tokenistic state of the country would cause these women to go to extremes to get the same rights men had. Questions I would like to answer in my paper are: Why did it take so long to achieve their goal? Why where women who might be more educated than some men denied the right to vote when they could make more educated decisions than most men? Why where women the last citizens of the United States to gain the right to have a voice in politics?
For my research paper I want to talk about the differences between ancient art and Modern Art.
Ancient art was used to keep a record of history. It was used to attempt to tell you what people witnessed in the past through pictures. Ancient art was also used as an expression of religion and beliefs that people had in the past. Now, modern art is used to express personal emotion, and instead of trying to illustrate facts, they illustrate imagination. By looking at modern art, you rarely learn about actual events in history of what people witnessed. You usually only see their interpretation, and not the overall picture.
For my research paper I want to talk about how during past times of political tensions and war have affected the Olympic games. The Olympics are meant to be a friendly sporting event in which countries send their best athletes to showcase their talents. Although that is the goal, they're several times in the past when the Olympics had countries banned, boycotted, or even were forced to cancel the whole Olympic games due to reasons outside of sports. Examples such as the World War 1 and 2 cancellations, Cold War Olympics, and many other times in which political tensions, war, or distrust in other countries affected the Olympics greatly. I also want to go into more detail and talk about individual athletes who have made a huge impact on the Olympics both politically and athletically such as the Jesse Owens incident in 1936 Berlin. Overall, I want to present how in the past the Olympics have been so much more than just a sporting event during times of high tensions and war.
For my research paper I want to talk about ice hockey in the winter olympics and the possibility of not allowing professional players to participate in the olympic tournament anymore. Like what the pros and cons are to having the young and upcoming all stars participate and play in the tournament, instead of the professional players that have been playing in the tournament the past couple olympics. Also the logistics of the possible new rule, and how maybe there should be an age limit for the people to play in the tournament during the olympics. I want to research how this possibility could have an effect on the NHL players, the young and upcoming players, and the people around the world who support or dont support this new possibility.
“Peter did you know that your Great Grandfather was a Colonel in World War One?” This is a question I’ve heard often from both my mother and my grandmother, but never heard more than that. The only fact and perhaps the most important thing I was told about his time in the war was that he was an American Colonel in the Cavalry. I was always blown away by this and sometimes find myself asking two questions. First, who was Colonel Beckner during the war? And what was he doing on top of a horse in an impossibly mechanized field of battle? I would like to investigate both of these questions in my term paper. I’m lucky to still have my grandmother who remembers her father and I would plan on interviewing her on him. There can only be incredible stories from his tour, as well as commonly unknown information about the American cavalry in World War One.
For my paper I want to write about how social media and hand held technology has changed teenagers for the better and worse. I am always asking my mother and father how did they stay in touch with friends, organize events and stay connected with the world. At the moment their is so much controversy over snap chat and facebook. Teenagers sending explict photos via snap chat and bullying each other over facebook. Also something that I have noticed is how much teenagers are attached to their phones and social media. If you go to a restaurant or watch a group of teenagers hanging out most of the time they will be on their phones and not interacting with each other. What does this say about our generation of teenagers?
For my research paper I am going to research the changes in racism through the course of Americas history. I’m going to look into Americas past through topics and people such as the KKK, Malcolm X, Martian Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and things as current as Trayvon Martin and the incident in Ferguson Missouri. Even though America has made strides in reducing racism it is still in happening in the year 2015 while America has an Africa American president. I’m going to look into answering the question as to why racism is still an issue in America and how racism is affecting Americas past, present, and future.
Hello World. For my term paper I will be writing about counter-culture in the 1950's-60's. This will include the Beat movement to the Beatles to the Summer of Love and everything in between. There is so much to be learned from these 20 years. Although today I have only touched the surface of this time period, I am terribly excited to delve into learning about it. On top of this, the women's rights movement and the civil rights movement took place during these decades. I can't wait.
For my research paper, I would like to write about the effects that the 9/11 terrorist attacks had on America. In my paper I will go into detail on what exactly happened on September 11, 2001. Since the attacks on 9/11 the way the U.S. government looks at terrorist threats has changed greatly. I plan on talking about these changes. I want to research how modern technology has played a role in preventing more attacks like this. Changes in technology have made it much easier to detect threats in airports, as well as in cities, and other populated areas. In addition, I want to look at how the American public has changed their views on Arab Nations, and the people who inhabit them.
For my term paper I would like to talk about a very historic moment in United States history during the Olympics in 1980. This was when the US defeated the Soviet Union in hockey and eventually won the Gold medal. This is something that boosted the United States moral at the time, and caused Jimmy Carter to make many big decisions in the upcoming days and years. What many people do not know is that the US was in a lot of controversy before and during these Olympics. They was the threat of the Cold War, and the devastating Vietnam war a couple of years before along with many other world issues the Unites States was involved with. This game meant more than just a win on the ice for that team and the US, as it gave the country hope in a way people have said. That is why for my term paper I would like to talk about and explore how this game and sport changed the attitude and moral of a country that was in the slumps for many years prior.
I would like to do my term paper on the evolution on American Football and how it built American Identity and how it impacted American History. Football was seen to be too dangerous and was almost banned in the early 1900’s but one of the activists who pushed to keep the sport was Teddy Roosevelt. Since football at the time was a College/University based sport, Roosevelt stated that football taught leadership and teamwork witch offered perfect training for the competitive world of business. -Lewis Grassie
For my research paper, I would like to write about the world-famous sailing event, The America's Cup. The America's Cup is the most prestigious regatta in the sailing community. For the paper, I plan to focus on the history of the event, and how it has modernized and progressed throughout the years since its founding. I will have a very unique perspective on the event, since my grandfather competed in and won the event twice in his life. I will talk to him directly and find out what it was like to actually compete in such a renowned event, as well as gain some information on his overall experience and knowledge of the event. As a sailor myself, this topic is extremely interesting to me and I am really looking forward to getting to know more about this fascinating regatta. -Rawson Clough
For my term paper I would like to write about my great-great-great-great grandfather, Nathaniel Bowditch (also my middle name). He was a pioneer in nautical navigation. He invented the sextant, an important nautical navigation tool that is still used today. He also wrote the book The New American Practical Navigator, which is still carried on every U.S. Naval vessel. I have heard about him many times before, and have been to the exhibit dedicated to him in Salem Massachusetts in the Peabody Essex museum. I really want to know more about my namesake and his amazing advances in nautical navigation. -Sophia Peluso
For my term paper I am going to write about the famous english rock band The Beatles, and how they changed music and history forever. I will go into detail about the band and it’s popularity that led John Lennon saying that The Beatles were “More Popular then Jesus”. The Beatles made people excited, their music was inspiring and people followed them all over the world. I am also going to explore their break-up and the assassination of John Lennon. To make my paper exciting I am going to interview the Beatles fans in my life and include actual Beatles music to reflect the change of their music over time and how the world around them influenced their songs. -Lane Mayher
Since open for business in 1916, Boeing is the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer. Back then, only the Douglas Company can fight against Boeing. Later on when Douglas faced financial difficulties and went bankrupted, Boeing’s top aircraft manufacturer status was undefeatable. Although the Douglas Company restarted as McDonnell Douglas Company later, it already lost many of its customers. The McDonnell Douglas Company’s faith ended as the Boeing Company purchasing them. The only time Boeing’s position was challenged is now. The Airbus Company, which is a joint European government-funded aircraft manufacturer based in Blagnac, France, was now a company which has the same reputation and ability to make state-of-art airplanes. Since the first success of A300 jet, the all-time best-seller single aisle airplane A320 and the well-known jumbo A380, Airbus was able to close the gap between Boeing and them. This research paper is going to take a look why Boeing lost its advantages and leads as it used to dominate the market. I will also research about what Airbus has done to make itself the second best airplane manufacturer in the world
For my research paper, I am going to investigate the Silk Road. The Silk Road has two meanings. Centuries ago, the Silk Road was a trading route used in the eastern hemisphere to transport illegal goods and substances within and between countries. Today, the Silk Road is a colloquial term for the underground drug trade all over the world. For my research paper, I would like to investigate and research the specifics of this system. I would like to research the progression of the Silk Road from a simple but underground trading route to an anonymous web marketplace. The history of this trading system is extremely interesting to me and I would like to research this topic further in my research paper. -Tatum Boyle
Softball has been a sport since November 24th, 1887 when Yale and Harvard students met up on Thanksgiving Day. Since that day, softball has been played competitively by both female and male. Softball, very similar to baseball, is played around the world and entered the Summer Olympics in 1996 as a women only event. Softball was only played four times in the Olympics rendering The Unites States with three gold medals and one silver medal. It was voted out of the Olympics for the year of 2012 because of the lack of competition. Historically the United States, Australia, Japan and occasionally China were the only victorious nations. This has been greeted with great protest, as both softball and baseball are very competitive sports that should be celebrated globally. Another large dispute is that softball is not the only sport that is heavily dominated by a few countries; luge is won by a European nation 97 % of the time. Hockey also used to be selectively dominated but as time progressed more countries began to improve and become competitors. Softball did not have a long enough time to become perfected by other countries and should be reentered into the Olympics.
For my term paper, I would like to be talking about how technology has evolved from start till now, and where it will be heading. I will give a summary of technology, then go into the pros and cons. For the pros I will talk about how it has helped the way war is fought, helped with communication, etc. Now for the cons, I will talk about how it has affected humans social life, and how it has decreased the attention span for teenagers. I believe this topic will be fun to research because this is a big thing nowadays in society.
For my research paper I would like to write about the 1956-66 Texas Western College Basketball team. The coach of the team, Don Haskins, decided to start five African-American players throughout the season. During this time period racism was supported throughout the United States, especially in Texas. It was unheard of to even have more than one African-American players on a collegiate team. The 1956-66 Texas Western team went on to win the NCAA National Championship and finished with a 28-1 record making them one of the best college basketball teams ever. Don Haskins was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame. Later a movie, Glory Road, was made in 2006 about Don Haskins and his team going on to win the National Championship. This Texas Western basketball team changed college and professional sports forever by showing that African-Americans were equal. -Trevor Berry
For my term paper I am going to write about how events at the Olympic Games throughout history have affected politics, similar to Harrison's idea. However, I am going to go into detail about how events at the Olympics went on to affect political decisions. For example, I will discuss the 1980 Gold Medal hockey game when the US defeated the Soviets. After this game, President Jimmy Carter made important decisions regarding the Cold War and the country's involvement. Another example of how the Olympics has affected politics is the Munich Massacre. Palestinian extremeists from the group Black September stormed the Olympic village and invaded the building where Israeli athletes were staying. After killing two athletes, the terrorists took nine hostages. After this events, security at the Olympics was upgraded, the United States made major changes in their foreign diplomatic policies, and terrorism was made a global concern. I will go into detail about these events and many other Olympic events that went on to affect politics.
Throughout my life, I have been very interested in the development of aviation in first half of the twentieth century. I am always blown away when I think about the fact that humans went from wood and fabric contraptions to spacecraft in a remarkably short period of time. From the Wright Brothers to Lindbergh to Alan Shepard and John Glenn, aviation has progressed so far since 1903. In my term paper, I will investigate not only the technological aspect of aviation, but also the social and diplomatic concerns that it brought with it. I hope to learn much more about this topic in my research.
For my term paper I will be writing about how social media has affected people over time specially woman. I will be reaching how social media has changed people’s ideas on image. I want to learn how instagram, twitter, Facebook, etc. has changed the few of image. More eating disorders have occurred in the past ten years with these social media platforms. 47% of girls in 5th-12th grade reported wanting to lose weight because of magazine pictures. Before the boom of social media the image of woman was completely different from our views today. Magazines in previous decades included what we now call ”plus size woman” and now magazines today include unrealistic images.
The Vietnam war was one of the longest and most controversial wars of the time period beginning in 1954 and ending in 1975. This time period was one that also marked the introduction of freedom of the press, which allowed the media to clearly portray the war over seas to those Americans at home. Before 1968 Americans believed that the US was winning the war in Asia until true depictions of the war were shown. This caused a large amount of controversy within the states and many doubted president Johnson’s credibility. As one of the first wars to be covered so closely by the media it had an influence in the events that took place and as a result for my term paper I would like to study the influence of media in the Vietnam war.
For my paper, I would like to write about terrorist groups and terrorist attacks in America over time. I will use many examples of terrorist groups and talk about specific attacks they have done. I would like to learn about the mentality and psychological aspect of these groups and how they continue to hurt our country. I think it will be interesting to compare terrorist groups and why they do the things they do. I will also focus on specific terrorists and attacks they have made. I will talk a lot about 9/11 and discuss how this among other terrorist attacks have shaped our country both for the better and the worse. -Annie Hubbard
For my term paper I would like to talk about how the United States perspective of women has changed and differed from other countries. By doing this I would look at how different countries saw women from 1865 to 2015. I would focus on how the growth of social media and advertising in the United States has developed rapidly and how they have influenced our vision of the "perfect woman." The United States tends to have a very different idea of the "perfect woman" compared to other countries. I would explain in my paper the reasonings of this and what people, organizations, musicians and companies are trying to do to change this. Many campaigns have recently started trying to help women gain the same amount of respect that men get. This is showing that even though women have the same rights as men, men and women are still not completely equal in the United States. In other countries I would show how the advertising and social media, or lack there of, has differed from the United States getting a perspective both more positive and more negative than the perspective in the United States.
For my research paper, I will study the events of the Boston Marathon bombings and how the Boston Red Sox inspired a struggling city to become “Boston Strong”. The bombing hit home for me, as I knew runners who had finished the same race a short time before the bombs went off. The attacks caused a usually buzzing city to press pause. When the manhunt for the criminals responsible for carrying out the bombings began, Boston was on lockdown and a Red Sox game was postponed to a later date. Just days after the bombings, a stirring pregame ceremony led by David Ortiz as he yelled “This is our f*ing city” inspired Boston and the Red Sox. The Red Sox won that game against the Kansas City Royals off a late home run by Daniel Nava, the seventh straight win for the Sox. The momentum gained by David Ortiz’s speech never seemed to fade away, with the Red Sox winning their division, the American League, and the World Series. I want to discuss the importance of the Red Sox in helping to heal a broken city.
I really love traveling and I feel that because I love traveling there is not a limit to where I would travel to. I would enjoy writing about the Space Race between the United States and the USSR. This is during the Cold War and shows the great lengths of how countries would compete against each other to travel the farthest and to also get a human being into outer space. From about 1957 to 1969, the USA and the USSR were trying basically show the world which country had the better technology to perform such a extraordinary task.
For my research paper, I would like to write about the world-famous racing event, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The Iditarod is the most prestigious race in the sled dog racing community with hundreds of years of rich history waiting to be explored. I would like to go into depth on not only the race itself, but the history of how it began, and all of the fascinating stories that the race has come to bring. I have always been fascinated by the race ever since I read Call of the Wild by Jack London. I would like to use the information I learned through that book and connect it into my paper. -Hunter Reynolds
For my research paper, I would like to write about major immigration movements into the U.S. from other countries, and how these large amounts of immigrants, such as the Irish from the Great Famine to the Mexican population that still continues to flow in, have affected society and politics in America throughout the past two centuries. The reason why I take interest in this topic is because I am part of the first generation of my Chinese family to be raised in America. I understand that there is a lot of stereotypes for any race in America. I want to understand the root of these stereotypes along with what other races have gotten as a reaction from American societies as they moved in as well. -Kevin Xu
Term paper: How did technology accelerate the changes (evolution) in the fashion industry?
The businesses need to keep up with the speed of change to be successful. For example in fashion the ecommerce has become more and more competitive therefore challenging. The companies who don't stay ahead in the game lose their customers. The graphics play a great role in this process because if you're website isn't as updated as the others you lose the customers interest. In order to win over the customer, the fashion businesses want to have their online shopping experience be the most efficient and attractive to the customer. It has become a tedious process because there is so much to pay attention to on a website and every button has to be functioning perfectly.
Many stores have had trouble with their website and keeping up with the online shopping competition. Therefore have lost customers and revenue.
Online shopping has evolved so much just from two years ago. Brands have learned how to promote their company efficiently through the Internet. By sending emails about new arrivals, or discounts. Whenever you are just browsing the Internet, there will be ads on the sides of the pages of the stores you recently viewed and were interested in. Seeking the customers demands.
Social media too has had a great impact on the world of fashion.
Originally the fashion industry only targeted the upper class. During this time, a few designers existed, therefore the diversity was much smaller. Marketing was created and changed its audience forever. It opened a new door full of opportunity and creativity. It would not only widen their industry but play a bigger role in our capitalistic society and people's every day lives.
For my research paper i am going to talk about the evolution of sniper rifles and how they have changed from World War ! to the current period. I will in this discuss how the rifles years ago are not as powerful as the ones they have today. The rifles years ago didnt have some of the features that are rifles currently have today. First thing i will discuss is scope evolution. I will talk about how far the scopes see today and how far they shot years ago. I will discuss sound technolgy. How the sound of the bullet is quieter than it was years ago. Finally i will discus range and size of bullet. How the sniper rifles today shot a bigger bullet and much father than years ago.
Many people believe that the 1927 New York Yankees are the best Major League Baseball Team in history. For my topic, I would like to look into and see if the 1927 Yankees are actually the best baseball team ever. Some people say the 1998 Yankees were the best baseball team ever, better than the Yankees in 1927 and so I would look into each team and compare them as well, finalizing in the end of my paper, which team I believe is the best team in history.
For my research paper I want to talk about the history of lacrosse and how it evolved over time. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and I want to research where it all began. There is right history behind the game and is dates back all the way to the 1600s. I want to talk about where the game started, who played it and why. There were pregame rituals and I want to research what to meaning was. the Native American people used lacrosse as a healing game and as a game to resolve conflicts between tribes. The game has been going on for hundreds of years and I want to research how lacrosse impacted the Native American culture back then, and now. I want to see how equipment, rules, and playing style has evolved and how its different today than it was before. I want to talk about what kind of role the Native American lacrosse traditions play in the lacrosse community today.
During WWII, women entered the workforce and took over jobs that were vacated by men. Jobs, that were originally not open to women. Women filled these positions and proved to the world that they could work just as hard and well as men. Icons such as Rosie the Riveter and her “We Can Do It!” campaign, encouraged women to leave their homes and enter the workforce. Women, did enter the workforce and many of them did not want to leave their jobs once the men returned from war. This was a turning point for women because they began demanding jobs. To support women rights, during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, the United States’ government passed laws forbidding discrimination. However, decades later, even with discrimination laws in place, women are still not equal to men and are continually fighting for equal positions and pay.
Thousands of women have served in combat roles but it wasn't until last year (2013) did The Pentagon release the ban on women serving in combat. Women have been serving in these roles alongside men and have not been able to advance in the ranks due to their service not being “official”. Men have been receiving better pay and have advanced in the ranks whilst women haven’t had the opportunity to do so. This has been a controversy for quite some time until last year when The Pentagon decided to release the ban. So, this is what I have decided to write my term paper on.
For my term paper, I would like to write about how photography in social media takes major events that occur around the world and how it has influences on people in society. I love photography and social media is a big part of society in positive and negative ways. I want to take photos of major events that took place and discuss the importance of them by describing how the photo has significance. I believe that things do not seem as bad until people see the reality of those things, despite the potential gruesome truth.
Travelling is something I was really interested for a long time, but I never had a chance to visit as many places as I would love to. Now that I am in America, really diverse country with people from all around the world, I have a chance to learn about a new culture every day. In my term paper, I want to explore the cultural, social, and religious differences between Somalia and America. Somalia where everyone has the same language, culture and religious beliefs, and America where there are people from very different backgrounds and cultures. I want to look into how the traditions and cultural practices affect the social life and shape each county’s government.
For my paper I would like to write about the evolution of woman’s fashion. I will discuss and analyze each social class and how being wealthy or poor altered the way women dressed. I will also talk about what was thought to be inappropriate then but has changed to be the normal attire for the 21st century. I think this topic will be interesting to investigate because within only 100 years wardrobe has changed tremendously. I think I will also include many countries and ethnicities' style of clothing and how it differs from the United States. Overtime many religions have regulated there dress and it hasn't changed as much as other places throughout the world. I will compare and contrast the style of clothing worn during each decade leading up to now. Ione Bartlett
The greatest obstacle for the U.S during the reconstruction age was reinforcing the freedom and equality we had promised to the blacks after the war. We had fought the war and won, saying we would give blacks their rights. We had written the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment. After we had done all of these changes, we believed we were done and all blacks would be equal to whites. We just sat there and waited expecting everything to work out. However, it had not been as easy as we thought, there were no real results until much later. The 13th, 14th and 15th amendments had not had as great of an impact as we thought it would. The south found a way around the amendments by interpreting the amendments incorrectly, allowing them to take advantage of the blacks rights once again, just like before the war. The south continued to discriminate against them. The governments of southern states used literacy tests and poll tax to prevent the blacks from voting. I think that once we had won the war, we stopped and didn’t reinforce the equality and freedom of the blacks. As a result, think carrying out the support for blacks rights after the war was the biggest challenge throughout the reconstruction era.
The main problem for the United States during the reconstruction period was the racism that remained in the South even after the 13th Amendment. Without a solid education, former slaves found it extremely hard to find jobs especially in a South, a place that was still hateful towards blacks. Though slavery no longer existed in America, racism drove some extremists to create white supremacy groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and the Knights of the White Camelia. This heightened tensions in the south between whites and blacks and made it hard for blacks to vote even after the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were ratified. Due to the blacks inability to get jobs in a deeply racist south, almost a third of freed slaves died from disease and from lack of shelter. The Freedmen’s Bureau was created by General Oliver Otis Howard to assist blacks in the post-slavery period. However, racist political cartoons made the general American public doubt the bureau, and by the time the bureau came to pass, it was ignored by many. Also, Jim Crow Societies created total segregation of whites and blacks in the south. The two races couldn’t marry, go to school together, or even drink from the same water fountain as one another. Though organizations such as the NAACP were created around the time of reconstruction, the Civil Rights movement would not gain massive national support until later in the 20th Century. Racism in America still remains today as a result of such a broken nation being unable to settle its differences.

ReplyDeleteAncient art was used to keep a record of history.

The Vietnam war was one of the longest and most controversial wars of the time period beginning in 1954 and ending in 1975. The United States tends to have a very different idea of the "perfect woman" compared to other countries. I would explain in my paper the reasonings of this and what people, organizations, musicians and companies are trying to do to change this. Many campaigns have recently started trying to help women gain the same amount of respect that men get. This is showing that even though women have the same rights as men, men and women are still not completely equal in the United States. Term paper: How did technology accelerate the changes (evolution) in the fashion industry?
ReplyDeleteThe businesses need to keep up with the speed of change to be successful.

Term Paper: Controversy of Women in Combat Roles
ReplyDeleteThousands of women have served in combat roles but it wasn't until last year (2013) did The Pentagon release the ban on women serving in combat.
