  1. I believe that the Nineteenth amendment is obviously the greatest Progressive Era amendment. It's possibly one of America's most important amendments of all time. The right for women to vote truly should’ve been included in the constitution, just as it should’ve allowed African Americans to be free and have the right to vote. In a perfect democracy, all citizens within the law should be allowed to vote. For leaders to be elected correctly and truly be a reflection of the people’s thoughts, all adults must be able to choose those leaders. Until we had this amendment, only fifty percent of the eligible citizens could vote.
When we allowed women to vote, it meant that the other half of educated, working, and intelligent people of our population had been granted an opportunity to change their lives. It is truly democratic, capitalistic, and American to be given the option to change your standing and choose the way you’re governed. Of course there were women who didn’t vote, but the rest now had the power to choose only the politicians that would support women equally.
Compared to the other amendments, the nineteenth really gave the most people the most power. It also very much helped the government as it could only be filled by people voted in elections with 100% of the people.
Without the nineteenth amendment, our country would’ve stayed in an unfair democracy. Unfair to women that they didn’t have the opportunity to vote or be considered first class citizens with the same rights of men. The nineteenth amendment brought us one step closer to utopian democracy.

During the Progressive period, I believe the Constitutional Amendment that was most needed by the American people was the 16th amendment, where Americans had to pay an income tax. This amendment was passed largely due to the unpopular high tariff on imported goods, therefore the U.S. would not have to rely on tariffs to raise revenue. In short, the 16th amendment shifted taxes on goods being imported onto the profits made by corporations in the United States. The 16th amendment brought in large amounts of revenue to the U.S. government, which mean't they could help improve America, and American life. With the government's new source of revenue, they could build new infrastructures, build a stronger army, produce more goods and provide for the poor that did not have a high amount of income. Also it gave the government opportunity to expand and fund programs that could help American's lives. As the government brought in much more revenue, it made life a lot better for americans throughout the country. The tax made it so money was distributed throughout the country to areas in need, instead of having the 1% continuing to build up their wealth without sharing it. The 16th amendment was also very effective when the first world war started. Without this income tax, the financing for the war would have been extremely difficult, but since it was passed, it gave the government the right to increase the tax when in need of large amounts of revenue, which was the case when the start of the war came. The income tax made it so the U.S. could build a strong army that was very much needed prior and during the war that came about. The 16th amendment gave opportunities to the government to improve America in many aspects that would make life for American citizens much easier, more enjoyable and more fair throughout the country. It gave the U.S. a starting point to begin expanding the country to be a more successful, equal and strong nation, along with changing the citizens lives drastically in giving them a better life style.

  3. The Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits women from being denied the right to vote. I believe this Amendment was the most important during the Progressive Period. The United States fought for years on racism, as African Americans were considered lower and worthless to the white people. But in 1870, male African Americans got the right to vote. At this time, the government was trying to put an end to racism, but sexism was still very strong. Men thought they were superior to women. A woman’s duty was to stay at home, clean, and have babies. Ratified in 1920, all American women were given the right to vote. That is 50 years after male African Americans were given suffrage. The Nineteenth Amendment not only made everyone considered equal, it also gave women more confidence and a sense that they could accomplish more. In the past they were only considered as a man’s property. They were not considered intelligent enough to make valuable decisions, let alone voting who should run the country. Women started to get jobs outside the home to support their families, played sports, and shorted their dresses and hair. The Nineteenth Amendment was needed to let the country know that women are considered equal under the law.

  4. I believe that the most important amendment passed during the progressive movement, was the Nineteenth Amendment. Stating that, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” This was so important because it changed the role of woman in the United States. Before this amendment, women were considered objects of their husbands and almost valuables. The women in the United States did not have a voice and were tired of being suppressed for so long, so they decided to fight for what they deserved. Alice Paul, a women’s suffragist, started a movement to gain the addition of an amendment to the constitution, granting women the right to vote. Through militant tactics and perseverance, this goal was reached on June 4, 1919 when Congress passed the Nineteenth Amendment. This amendment gave women the freedom and voice they had been longing for. This was important to the United States, because it would advance as a country with the addition of the knowledge and capabilities of women to its society. This also made an impact because now women started to take on more notable occupations, and the work force was not only made up of men anymore. Women were inspired to take on larger challenges and face the world with the determination they could now show publically. Women could now be considered equals to men, even though it would take some time for society to see it that why, this amendment laid the ground work for sex equality in the United States.

Personally, I think the Nineteenth Amendment was most needed by the American people during the Progressive Period. The Nineteenth Amendment allows women the right o vote. Women should have a say in suffrage periods and American people needed that during the Progressive Period. Women’s suffrage has helped our country tremendously, especially during the Progressive Period. Like Peter Bahr said, "The right for women to vote truly should’ve been included in the constitution, just as it should’ve allowed African Americans to be free and have the right to vote. In a perfect democracy, all citizens within the law should be allowed to vote.” Everybody should be able to express who they want to select for president if eligible. If this amendment didn’t happen, only a small percentage of voices would be heard, and those voices would only be men. Why would that be fair? Women not only were hardworking at the time, but they were educated and smart. When this amendment was passed, women were able to help contribute to their specific community’s needs and help the country as a whole, and that is what the American people needed. American people needed this most because it gave them way more power and say during this period of time. Since it gave the people more say and were able to express who they wanted to elect, and it helped the government in many ways, too. It helped know that the winning candidate was wanted by a majority of the people, not just men, during the popular vote selection. As I said before, Peter Bahr said,"The right for women to vote truly should’ve been included in the constitution, just as it should’ve allowed African Americans to be free and have the right to vote.” and that helped us start to reach our goals towards equality of all American citizens.

  6. During the progressive movement all of the amendments were important, however, I believe that the 16th amendment, income tax, was the most necessary for the success of the US. This amendment was passed because of a supreme court case which declared federal income tax unconstitutional. Before it was passed the US had high tariffs on other things such as imported goods and these high taxes were hard to pay for the poor. What the 16th amendment did was downsize the tax on imported goods and install a income tax for large corporations. Now that the US had a more effective tax creating better revenues they can start to improve the nations flaws. With this new money they can fund things like building ports and bridges and fix roads and help fund factories that create more exports generating more revenue for the US. The passing of this amendment was good timing, the start of World War I was coming and the US needed to fund the army. Luckily the amendment was passed and the US had ample amounts of funds to help make the war a success. Basically the reason that reason the 16th amendment was the most important was because it gave the government a financial boost in its time of need. The revenue created from the new income tax helped fund things that the US desperately needed and was a morale boost for the American people also it was a big reason we succeeded in WWI.

  7. I believe the most important Progressive Period Amendment to the US Constitution was the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Before the Progressive Period even began, women were attending secondary schools and getting a great education, as well as taking on jobs as men went to war, and all while becoming a larger voice in society. The women of this time were incredibly driven and strong, they wanted to learn and go to school, and they often were the sole caretakers and providers for their families when their husbands went off to war. They deserved the right to vote because they are citizens of the United States and they deserve to have a choice in who leads them.
A major American ideal is that all people are equal. Women, men, blacks, whites, Latinos; we are all equals. The 19th amendment reinforced this ideal. It reflected the true American identity: equality and freedom. The 19th is by far the most important Progressive Period amendment because all citizens should have the right to vote for whom they think will lead them the best, regardless of their gender.

  8. Please select the Progressive Period Constitutional Amendment that you feel was the most needed by the American people and explain your decision clearly.

I feel strongly that the most important Constitutional Amendment during the Progressive period was the Nineteenth Amendment. This amendment gave women the right to vote. In a country whose preaches freedom and equality for all it makes no sense to me why women were denied this basic right for so long. Peter Bahr said it perfectly, “the right for women to vote truly should’ve been included in the constitution, just as it should’ve allowed African Americans to be free and have the right to vote. In a perfect democracy, all citizens within the law should be allowed to vote.” In a time where the economy needed every single citizen to contribute and work hard, it is only right that every citizen has the same rights. Women were working just as hard, if not harder, than most men at the time. Women had to follow all of the laws passed by the government, so how could it be considered fair not to give them a say in who is elected president? The answer is simple…it’s not! Women suffrage activists such as Alice Paul worked incredibly hard to achieve what should have been given to them when the constitution was originally drawn up. Denying women the right to vote meant that only ½ the population was giving their opinion on who should lead. If only a portion of the population was voting it would be impossible to know which candidate was actually the most liked by the entire American people. It would be very hard to fix all of the other problems in America at the time if half the population is unhappy with the government. Therefore, by giving women the right to vote America was one step closer to becoming the happy, productive nation it is now. That is why I believe the Nineteenth Amendment was the most needed by the American people during the Progressive Period.

I believe that of course the 19th Amendment was the most important and the most needed by the Americans during the Progressive Period. For everything during the time before allowing the women to vote and to really have a say, it was pretty much just men. It was the men's choice in everything. To vote a president into office, everybody in the country needs to vote, not just men. Our population are not just men and letting women vote was massive for that. We got the view from the women which was different as they never had a say before the time. This was a step toward everyone being equal, and it was a big step. This helped our government in voting for candidates of different positions. It gave them the view and say of the whole country like it should be, not just half. Women worked hard and were tough at this time and really deserved this Amendment. They got their say in things and as a country, we got our full site on things which is much better for our country and this is why the 19th Amendment which let women the right to vote was the most important Constitutional Amendment that was needed by the Americans during this Progressive Period.

  10. During the Progressive era, I believe that the 17th amendment was most needed by the American people at the time. I do believe that the 19th amendment was also very important and that women’s right to vote was a big step towards equal rights in the United States. Although, the 17th amendment was bigger for the American people at the time because of the corruption in the United States government. By allowing the citizens of the United States to vote for the senators, the people would be able to choose who they wanted and not what the big business owners wanted. The big business owners were the ones selecting the senators before the 17th amendment and because of that, they wanted to keep a government that would best suit them and their money. These hand picked senators did nothing for people of the United States but instead made sure that they would always be wealthy because they controlled the government. By allowing the voters to pick the senators made it possible for this corrupt government to finally fall apart. The voters wanted people who would make a positive change for their country and not just watch the rich get richer. So if the government was still corrupt, allowing women to vote would do nothing for them. First the government needed to change before anything else would change. That is why the 17th amendment was the most needed among the American people during the Progressive era.

  11. The most needed amendment during the progressive period was women suffrage. The 19th amendment gives American citizens the right to vote, regardless of their gender. At a time where women were becoming equal to men in society, working and earning an income when they were fighting in war, it was important for women to vote in elections so that they could be represented in government. As their husbands were at war, women had to take over men occupations and had to take care of the household. As they demonstrated to be as capable as men, they deserved the right to have a stay in how they were governed, especially since their husbands were unaware of American circumstances over seas. American’s fought for representation when they felt oppressed by England in the 1765, but now roughly half of the population wasn’t being allowed to vote based solely on their gender. This was undemocratic, and this amendment was fundamental in a movement towards acceptance towards all races and all genders. Many women fought for this amendment to be accepted. For example Alice Paul picketed and got arrested in order to fight for her own and other women liberty. Women are now educated equally to men and are equally qualified in the work force, by restricting their right to vote would be discriminative and unfair. Women still fight for equal paychecks and equal respect in society, but the amendment was essential in the fight for equality.

  12. I believe the most important amendment passed during this time was the nineteenth amendment allowing women the right to vote. Women had the right to express their thoughts and beliefs and women should have a say during the suffrage period. Everybody no matter who they are what race, ethnicity, gender, religion, should be able to have a say and vote in the United States. This Amendment allowed for more opinions to be heard all throughout the country, which really changed the perspective on things and what people truly thought. Women were working like men in society every day, were working in the war, and around the farms and houses. This should allow them to have a right to vote especially if they are fighting in the wars like many women started to do at this time. This amendment considered everyone to be equal under the law but also let women gain confidence, power and made them feel accomplished. Many people fought for this amendment to be passed. One of which was Alice Paul who had a tremendous impact. This Amendment showed the United States that women were also equal under this amendment and the constitution. The nineteenth amendment was to me the most important because it allowed everybody under the constitution as a United States citizen to vote, which is something crucial to have within a country.

  13. During the Progressive era, there were many amendments that were past that greatly advanced the United States in a positive direction. While the 17th amendment gives citizens simple freedoms of choosing who we would like to send to power, the 19th amendment was a much more basic and simple step that made a bigger difference then all of the others. The 19th amendment gave American citizens the right to vote no matter what gender you were. During a period of women gaining momentum to become equal in society with men, the amendment gave them that much more to become equal. Women were fighting in the war and earning an income just as men were, so it was important for them to vote so they were represented in government. American’s fought against their home country of England in 1765, now more then half of the population was not being allowed to vote based only on gender. This in and of itself is unbelievably hypocritical and this amendment was fundamental in a movement to equality for all. Women needed to take over male occupations and roles as their husbands were away at war. As they demonstrated they were just as important and capable as men, they deserved to have a say in government. Alice Paul was one of the many women who faught for the amendment to be accepted. She was arrested in order to fight for equality. Because of this amendment, women are now just as educated as men and are just as qualified to work in the work force. Women still fight for equal pay and respect, but giving them the right to vote was a major step in helping for full equality.

  14. In my opinion, the most important amendment of the progressive era was the 19th amendment, which enacted women’s suffrage. At the turn of the 20th century, politicians began to consider more and more progressive laws to be put in place. This was brought about because of the increasing pressure from women and others such as Robert La Folette. One of these resulting amendments was the 19th amendment which states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.” This amendment gave a large portion of Americans the right to vote. Naturally, this had an impact on elections, because politicians had to campaign to women as well as men. I believe that this amendment is important in American history because it truly validates the constitution by giving voting rights to everyone, whereas previously it was restricted. To restrict voting based on gender is against the constitution and everything this country stands for.

  15. Imagine living and working in a world where women are inferior to men. Where men have all of the say in government and women have none. In the world we live in today with people like Hilary Clinton, Janet Napolitano, and Condoleezza Rice it is a unusual thought. These women are such influential strong women that have held very high power positions such as Secretary’s of State and Secretary of Homeland Security. But in the 1920s before the 19th amendment was ratified on August 18th, 1920 this would have been impossible to think about. However women such as Alice Paul and Susan B. Anthony fought for what they knew was right, everyone having the right to vote no matter what gender you are. Alice Paul led the final stretch until the ratification, she was bold and unwavering, she also organized a Women’s Suffrage Parade in Washington D.C. to try to get the government to see what the women of the time wanted and deserved. This Amendment is most important of the Progressive Period because if the United States of America wanted to be one of the world’s superpowers they wanted to be they needed to make the people equal and one step was to stop putting gender restrictions on who was given the right to vote.

During the progressive period, the most important amendment that United States needed was the 16th Amendment, the Income Tax. President Howard passed the 16th Amendment after high tariff was imposed to imported goods. Poor people struggled to pay those taxes since they didn’t make enough money. At this point, poverty was increasing and the 16th amendment helped poor people without harming the rich. Based on how much money somebody earn, they pay the same percentage so it is fair to everyone. This gave the government financial support to fund schools, businesses, roads and the military. This new money helped the government in World War I since the US needed more funding in the military. The government could increase the income tax if the nation is in need of larger revenue which the US needed during the war. Overall, this amendment helped the nation to have access to more money to help the poor and build the country to the great nation it is today. Also, it supported all the changes that people wanted to see in the government because all those movements required funding and this helped the country move forward and progress.

  17. I believe the most important amendment during the Progressive Period was the 19th to pass women's suffrage. This amendment enabled the other half of the population to vote and have a say in who is in charge and who runs the nation. Women did not have the same rights as men when the U.S. was first founded. They fought for many years to get the right to vote and it was finally ruled in 1920. During this period, Alice Paul was a very influential activist because of her actions towards women's rights. Her main focus was to fight for women's right to vote and she successfully was granted her wish after a long time fighting. I cannot imagine if women still did not have the right to vote today. There are so many powerful women in the world that are highly respected because of the work they do, not because they are women. This amendment was the chance the U.S. needed to get rid of the sexism against women about the right to vote and finally be true to the fact that all men are created equal.

  18. Rapid industrialization and urbanization of America, combined with big (trust) business that controlled America’s finances, led to many social, economic and political problems. Corruption was ramped throughout the political system and the quality of life for many Americans was in jeopardy. Racial inequalities continued to exist as did gender discrimination. During the Progressive Era (1900-1920), there were many active groups of people, called progressives, which took the lead and pushed governments in creating a number of social, economical and political reforms. While so many reforms were important and needed, the most important reform was the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. The 19th Amendement was so important because it was the first step in giving equality to women, not only with voting rights, but as independent thinkers, workers and leaders. It set the stage for more equal rights to come.

Women like, Jane Addams and Ida Tarbell have contributed so much to society that it really wasn’t fair that they not have a say in choosing political leaders. Up until that point, women were supported by men and only had say over family and domestic issues. When the 15th amendment past, Stanton and Susan B Anthony in 1869 created the Nation Woman Suffrage Association, because they and women alike, felt it was unfair that women weren’t included in the 15th amendment. (Women Rights Movement) If African American men were 3/5 equal to white men, where did women stand? So when the 19th amendment passed on August 20, 1920, it was a long time coming, because women like, Lucy Stone, who formed the American Woman Suffrage Association, Alice Paul, who formed the Rival Congressional Union, Carrie Chapman Catt and hundreds of other women who joined the cause, were finally due their voting privileges. (women’s Rights Movement)

This suffrage movement and the 19th Amendment also set the stage securing power for women as leaders in local and national political offices. (Women’s Rights Movement) After the 19th Amendment past, many votes from women mirrored that of their husbands, but there was a select group of women who wanted political power and continued working toward that goal. However, back then, women was accepted “as workers, but not as co-makers of the world.” (Women’s Rights Movement) The few women that made it to congress had very little power but this movement set the stage for future “roles of power” that would later be occupied by women. Hence the 19th Amendment was the starting point for the women who wanted to make a difference in the world and have the power to do so.

The suffrage movement also foreshadows the women’s equal rights movement that continues today. It wasn’t until after WW1, when women filled men’s jobs, who were away at war, that they proved not only to themselves but to others, that they were as good as men. This empowered women to be independent thinkers and workers. Women used their political power during WWI for social change, especially towards the 19th Amendment. (Women’s Rights Movement) The suffrage movement combined with WWI, empowered women and gave them a level of independence that they didn’t have before. They were no longer property to their husband, but an equal citizen of the United States who could work, and provide a living to themselves and possibly others.

Even though roles, values, and laws have progressed and changed since the 19th Amendment, women have consistently trailed behind their male counterparts. Today, as women continue to earn pennies on the dollar to men’s salaries, glass ceilings, and discrimination continue to be the norm, and the struggle for equality continues.

  19. In my opinion, the most important Amendment established during the Progressive era would have to be the 19th amendment. I believe that this is the most important because it established true equality in society. Allowing/providing women with the right to vote not only creates an equal playing level between men and women but it ensures that women have a say in our government and are permitted to express their opinion. This amendment not only granted women the right to vote but it illuminates the beginning of change for women in society paving the way to opportunity in the work force. This amendment protects women's rights and highlights the importance of equality in society and how it can have a ripple effect on many different facets. This key and simple right was only enjoyed and used by men. Women were solely expected to remain the household cooking, cleaning, and motherhood never politics. Finally, this amendment changed the overall perception of women and paved a new road for change in all other facets.

  20. During the Progressive Movement a series of amendments were made to the US Constitution with the purpose of improving and strengthening the United States as a whole. Although some may feel otherwise, I believe that the 19th amendment that was passed by congress on June 4th, 1919, was the most beneficial and the most needed amongst the American People. The 19th amendment gave all American citizen the right to vote despite which gender you were. This changed the role of women in society, giving them power and a voice, which was now finally being heard. For a long time, the United States was driven by racism. This racist mentality denied people of different races the right to vote until the 15th amendment was established in 1870. While juggling with racism, sexism was also present amidst male minds. Only white men were allowed to voice their opinions and to vote for their ideal candidates. Women were incredibly hardworking, not only in the work force but on the home front as well, which can be notably seen from when women stepped up in the work force during World War I, taking on roles usually held by males. But not only that; women were also very intelligent and very eager to express their views which would ultimately benefit the country. Beginning around the time of the Civil War, the Women’s Suffrage Movement was run by powerful women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul and many more. The purpose for this movement was to gain recognition and equality for women. Years were spent educating others on equality for all by these women throughout this movement. So, why deny a gender or a race the right to vote? Everyone should have a say in a matter, especially if it has to do with who will be running the country they live in. When the 19th amendment was finally passed, a change was made. Women maintained a voice and with it now they became legible to vote and to contribute to the debate on who would take on official positions in government. Women now had the opportunity to experience things they may not have been able to prior to this amendment. Women’s Suffrage definitely served as the most important amendment made during the Progressive Era because it proved how the United States was strengthening and maturing.

  21. The 17th was the most needed amendment for the American people during the Progressive Era. This amendment put an end to corruption in the senate. Previously, senators were being paid by rich business men to pass laws that would help these rich men. This corruption was terrible for the people of the United States because the change was only helping big business men. The necessary changes to lessen the socioeconomic gap were not being met because of the corruption. By allowing voters to elect our senators, the power was returned to the hands of the people because the senators now had to actually work for the good of the majority of the people. This was the beginning to the end of the corrupt United States government. Nowaday, we see examples of countries ruined by corruption on the news. It is crazy to think that one hundred years, that was the United States. Although the 19th Amendment was very helpful for the ongoing fight for woman's rights, it did not affect a particular party in the elections. Rather, the new votes from women split equally between both parties. The 17th Amendment was much more needed at the time because it left a much larger impact on the government.

  22. I think that the nineteenth amendment to the United States Constitution ratified on August 18, 1920, granting women the right to vote was the most needed by the American people during the progressive period. The nineteenth amendment prohibited any United States citizen to be denied the right to vote based on sex. By the beginning of the 20th century, the role of women in American society was changing drastically; women were working more, receiving a better education, bearing fewer children, and several states had authorized female suffrage. Yet they were still treated like secondary citizens to men. Thus came the women’s suffrage movement. The movement became militant very quickly. Some suffragettes, or women campaigning for the right to vote, were arrested for public disorder and given prison sentences of anywhere from 3 days to several months. The passing of the nineteenth amendment settled many riots all over the country, which was highly needed for the United States, especially during times of war. This amendment leads to fair treatment of women in the public service as well. Women that must obey the laws should have a voice in making them, the nineteenth amendment made this possible. Overall, the nineteenth amendment did more than just allowing women’s suffrage and was extremely significant to the United States then and now.

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
According to the amendment, it clearly states that every American citizen should have the right to vote. But before that, let answer a question, why women were not allowed to vote? Is it because men were smarter than women? Is it because men were stronger? Or is it because men were the one who go out to work and feed the family? It is extremely sexist to take away women suffrage. The only reason why men did not allow women to vote is because men thought they were superior over women. Men thought women were less intelligent. Men would like to control over women. As a result, they took away women suffrage and made them less important. Men kept women away from political position, workspace management and many other areas. The fifteenth Amendment granted suffrage to African American in 1870. It took 50 years until men allowed women to vote. In order to become a superpower and the world police, the United States need not only military strength but also a fair and equal society. As a result, the United States will be able to spread human right as an example and idle.
After allowing the women to vote, the American voter population increased greatly. As a result, more people are allowed to participate in the election. Since women consider different factors and have different perspective when they are voting compare to men, the election result will be different from before and harder to predict. Since more people are voting, I believe people will choose the best president to lead America to success.

  24. I think the most important amendment passed during the Progressive Period was the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Before the amendment was passed on August 18th, 1920, women were thought of as men’s property and had to stay at home to cook and clean. They were also denied the right to vote and could not own land. Although women finally achieved suffrage, it involved a lot of hard work and dedication to get there. Many women activists such as Alice Paul worked immensely in order to achieve something that should have been there from the start. It is unimaginable to think that half of the American population was not allowed to vote because of their gender. Furthermore, the 19th amendment did not only represent women’s right to vote, but equality. If women had to follow all of the laws, why were they prohibited from having a say in all things involving government? Because of this amendment, equality was achieved between the genders and finally all American citizens had the right to vote.

  25. The most important amendment passed during the progressive period was the 19th amendment. The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote. Before this amendment, half the population wasn’t being accounted for in the government, which showed how racist the United States was. The 19th amendment stated that any United States citizen cannot be denied the right to vote based on sex. The amendment didn’t only give the women the right to vote. It also created more equality between both men and women. Alice Paul was a very influential activist that fought for women’s rights constantly. Even after she was jailed Alice Paul didn’t give up. She knew that what she was doing was the right thing to do and wouldn’t give up.

  27. I believe that the 19th Amendment was by far the most needed amendment throughout the progressive Era. This amendment changed the country greatly, both in terms of the general attitude as well as the changes that were pushed for in the government. Prior to this amendment, half of the country had no say in the government and who ran the country. The 19th amendment had to be passed, and their opinions had to be heard. When it was, women finally had a voice in the way the country was run. They could now begin to be seen as more than just a housewife. This gave women a positive attitude and the ability to push for things they believed in, further changing the country. It was a step in the right direction toward gender equality in the United States, and women could finally see hope. This displayed hope for the progressive movement and future changes to come, as well as the future of the United States as an equal and fairly represented country.

  28. In the Progressive Era there were many amendments ratified in attempt to regain equality throughout America. At a time when trusts dominated the financial market and corruption tainted the government, many changes were needed. Racial and gender inequality lingered and the Progressives decided it was time to negate the imbalance. The most important amendment passed during the Progressive Era was the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote. Permitting women the right to vote was a huge step for the United States because throughout history women had little to no "voice", and enfranchising women allowed them to contribute their say. It is unfair to limit the election of government officials entirely to men because they only make up half of our country's population. Anyone who is a citizen of the United States, regardless of gender or race, should be allowed to elect the government officials who represent them. Preventing women from this was utterly unfair and men did not have the right to declare women below them on social ladder.

    1. When it comes to human rights, wealth, gender, race, and social status are irrelevant. Women worked just as hard as men did are there was no logical explanation to prevent their votes. The women's suffrage movement led by Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, and countless others was put into action with the ratification of the 19th Amendment. This was a giant step for the Progressive Party in the elimination of the inequality which had consumed America, and the most significant amendment during the Progressive Era

  29. The most needed Progressive Movement for the Unites States people was “Income Tax”. This new attachment to the Progressive Movement was written down to be the “16th Amendment” of the United States Constitution. The 16th Amendment stated that every US Citizen who is receiving payment from any corporation must pay a fix percent of their pay and give it to the Government. At first many found this to be an awful idea and hated it, understandably because people are taking there money with out them knowing why. Then take the Income Tax payers realized that the government was actually taking their money and investing it in to organizations like the military and the highway system, witch was for their own good. Since this was just after and before two major wars, the Government had to replenish and repair its economic status for the safety of the country as a whole. In modern day it is second nature for people to pay income taxes and taxes on anything. Yet it doesn’t bother many people because they understand and realize that the government is taking their money for the benefit of them selves. With the Government taking all this revenue from taxes they are able to still support the world best military force, a education system and keep the country safe paying for police, firemen and hospitals. I believe the Income Tax was the most needed Progressive Constitutional Amendment for the people of the United States.

  30. Each amendment passed during the progressive period was very important and impacted society greatly but I feel that the 19th amendment was most needed by the American population. The 19th amendment prohibits any US citizen from being denied the right to vote on the basis of sex. The fact that woman were not allowed to vote just because they weren't men was utterly ridiculous. I agree with Peter when he says that woman's voting rights should have been included in the constitution to begin with. In order for the United States to be a democratic society and in order for the government to be run in a democratic way, people shouldn't be denied the right to vote just due to their sex. These woman were now given the opportunity to vote for politicians they felt would run America in the best possible way. This amendment finally gave power to both sexes of the American people. Prior to this amendment half of the country had no say in how America should be run which is not democratic. For the first time in American history it gave woman the opportunity to voice their opinions and Ideas which could have been changing America in a positive way for hundreds of years. With this power to vote they began to be more respected in society.

  31. In my opinion, the most important and influential amendment to the United States Constitution during the Progressive Era was the 19th Amendment. Ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment prohibited any United States citizen from the right to vote on the basis of sex. With men already having this right, what this meant for the country was women's suffrage. In my opinion, this Amendment was needed at the time above all else because of the state of women's rights at the time. At the time, women's roles consisted of staying at home, providing meals for the husbands and children, doing laundry, cleaning the house, and other such chores. Without a say in the government, their present state would never change. Think of where we are today with women: aside from minor social discrimination, we live in a world that would be unimaginable without the roles of women. In a nation that is half made up of women, and who prides itself on a government by the people for the people, a nation of total equality, how could it possibly be that half of our population was denied to right to vote?! It is unthinkable, the nation could not possibly move forward in such a manner. During the Progressive Era, the nation was focused on moving forward, evolving, and this could only be done with the help of women. Not only was the Amendment necessary and vastly influential during this era, but today, the country has come so far to a place where women are equal. Think of such women as Hilary Clinton or Patsy Mink, the fact that we have female elected representatives in our government really speaks about how influential women have become and how necessary their roles in our societies are. Without women's suffrage, women would have no way of voting and speaking their minds on topics like abortion- a topic that pertains mainly to them. The 19th Amendment was extremely needed at the time during the Progressive Era, and helped the nation progress as a whole. Without this movement, the United States would be nowhere near where we are today, and we are closer now to what we have always prided ourselves on being- a completely equal nation with a government run by the people for the people.

  32. I believe the Nineteenth Amendment was the most important among all the amendments during the Progressive Period. The nineteenth amendment gave woman the right to vote. Before August 18th 1920 (When the amendment was finally passed) woman were considered inferior to men. Women were not allowed to share their voice and were considered property. Woman also did not have the right to vote before the amendment, making half of our country’s population not be able to have a say for important matters such as government. Woman gained their rights when the amendment was passed but leading up to the passing of this law took a lot of hard work. Many women activists such as Alice Paul worked very hard for the nineteenth amendment to happen. The amendment should have never even needed to be created, it should have been a right from the start of the United States; everyone should have had the right to vote no matter his or her gender. This is why the I believe the Nineteenth Amendment was the most important amendment during the Progressive Period because not only did it give half the country rights but it also proved that we had finally achieved equality.

  33. During the progressive movement from 1900-1920 the most important amendment that was past was the nineteenth amendment that eliminated woman suffrage. This amendment was the most needed by the American people because this helped release the tension between the men and woman in America. America had finally allowed everyone to vote. Allowing the woman to vote made woman feel more empowered and helped level the playing field. Men had been the superior sex for years and finally they were giving woman some responsibility by allowing them to vote. This would spark a whole new world for the woman it would now be more common for them to work and have the confidence to do jobs that were viewed as jobs that only men could do. Now woman had a say in government and could speak up for what they truly believed in. Woman could now be seen as the smart and intellectual humans they are rather then men’s property. Woman’s roles of being in charge of the house would begin to change as they were being seen as more of an equal to men.

  34. The 19th amendment was created in 1919 and ratified in 1920 so ensure the voting rights for all US citizens regardless of gender. Before August 18th 1920- the date which the amendment was ratified by Tennessee (the 36th and last state to do so)- women in the Unites States had not yet been afforded their right to vote in political elections. The passing of this amendment was the culmination of the movement for Women’s rights in America that had began in the mid-19th century and was still being fought when this amendment was passed. The passing of the 19th amendment overruled the 14th, which did not afford women the right to vote. The passing of the 19th amendment was lead greatly by the incredibly strategist and tactician Alice Paul- also known as “the Straw that Broke the "Jackasses Back". Paul was a suffragist and womens’ rights activist. Through a series of peaceful protests and demonstrations, Paul eventually pressured Wilson and his government to take action towards the amendment. I believe that this amendment is the most important amendment that was passed during the progressive movement because if it had not been passed, half of my peers and I would not have the opportunity to voice and contribute our opinions regarding the people and administrations which run our country. The lack of this amendment constitutes as a direct lack of equal civil rights; without it, our country would be undeniably archaic and backwards-thinking. To exclude an entire gender from a basic civil right based on a physical state which they cannot change and do not have control over is simply abhorrent. In addition to this, exclusion of over half of a population in voting polls leads to results which do not accurately represent the opinions and wants of the country as a whole. Although all men may feel a certain way towards an election, women may feel differently. In the absence of their votes, the outcome will not result in accurate representation. By doing this, many great minds and opinions are being completely overlooked and unaccounted for in some of the most important decisions our country makes many times a year: elections. The right to vote should not be prohibited to any citizen of the United States- regardless of gender or race. To do so is a direct and outward violation of civil rights. To ensure equality in this country, civil rights must be standard and consistent across all races, genders, demographics etc.

  35. The 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote, was the most important amendment passed during the Progressive Era. In the beginning of the Progressive Era, our government was still recovering from excessive amounts of corruption during the Gilded Age. Two Major goals of the time were to restore control of the government to the people, and to set a new standard of honesty among politicians. During the Gilded age, business consolidations had began creating huge corporations, which if big enough, had the power to control the whole industry. The government was filled with people from these corporations. Thus, the government only represented the biggest and the richest business owners in the States, hence the goal of returning control of the government to the people. In order to make this goal become true, all people of every class needed be able to vote. Women take up 50% of the population. If America had any goal of returning power to the people, the first step would be to give the other half of the population the right to vote. It was absurd that America had gotten this far without women having a say in the government. Anyways, after a century of increasing activism, which was paused only during the civil war, the 19th amendment was ratified in August of 1920. The ratification of this amendment was necessary for the American population to have a government for the people, and by the people. This amendment sparked the fight for women's equality in coming years, and has changed the course of America for a more inclusive, diverse country, representative of it's whole population.

  36. During the Progressive Period of the United States there were four very important Amendments to the Constitution. The 16th Amendment said that all Americans had to pay an income tax. The 17th says voters will elect our Senators opposed to selection from the Government. The 18th Amendment prohibits alcohol, and the 19th giving women the right to vote. I believe that the 17th Amendment is the most important of these Amendments. The ability to vote for your representatives in government is the most important concept when it comes to democracy. Choosing who you want in office will also be a primer for more decisions to come. If you put the right people in government, it could be easier to obtain the other amendments that would progress the United States even further. If the people do not choose their senators you will have the same type of people making the same types of decisions in office and not progress the United States.

  37. During the Progressive Period, I believe the 19th Amendment was the most needed in America. This Amendment gave women the right to vote in federal elections. Since many of the men in the country were off fighting wars, it was important that women had a say in the government. They were the ones at home, which meant they deserved the right to choose who governed them. Also, many women were now being educated, working, and earning an income. They were filling the same roles that men held, equalizing their roles in society. It was only fair that women have their opinions be heard and be seen as more than just a man’s wife. So, when the 19th Amendment was ratified on August 18th, 1920, stating: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation,” it was the final step for the Women’s Suffrage Movement. This movement fought for years to provide women with voting rights. Women like Alice Paul led the movement towards a better future for women. This Progressive Period Amendment might have been one of the most important in history because of its impact on women’s rights and overall equality.

  38. There were several amendments that played an important role as far as strengthening America for the American people. The amendment that i feel was the one that was most needed by the American people was the Nineteenth Amendment. This Amendment said that any United States citizen cannot be denied the right to vote based on sex, hence giving woman in the country the right to vote. The first reason why I think this amendment was most needed is because this amendment isn't something that impacted a group in the country. This is an amendment that would impact 50% of the population. THERE ARE A LOT of woman that live in The United States and this VAST part of our countries population deserves equality like every body else. The second reason is because the 19th Amendment played a crucial role in sponsoring reproductive rights for women, ushering in a new voting population with a political outline that would finally allow contraception and abortion. Women also experienced economic progress as a result, with the increased availability of family-planning services and supplies allowing more women to enroll in higher education and enter professional occupations. This part is particularly important because now we see woman making more progress in different aspects which is not only great for this 50%, but great for the country's strength as a whole. This amendment is most needed because it would prove that passing would do more than just give woman equity, It would again strengthen the United States as a whole. The third reason why this amendment was most needed is because of PROPERTY. During the early 1900's woman were only thought of as men property. Their duty was to stay home and cook and clean. They did this whether they liked it or not. This was something that needed to be changed because it is not right and just to denie 50% of the population the right to vote or essential get a good job just because of gender. For this reason I think the Nineteenth Amendment was most needed by the United States. In addition, the fourth reason why i think it was most needed is because the amendment enfranchised all women, to ensure the amendment included women regardless of race. Finally, The 19th Amendment helped millions of women move closer to equality in all aspects of American life. Women advocated for job opportunities, fairer wages, education, sex education, and birth control. This amendment made a huge impact on American woman, and America as a whole, which is why I believe that the Nineteenth Amendment was the Progressive Period Constitutional Amendment that was needed most by the American people.

  40. During the Progressive Era, there were many amendments that were put into the constitution. The four amendments that were passed were American paying an income tax, the election of senators, prohibition, and women suffrage. All these amendments helped U.S. become stronger, but there is one amendment in my mind that I believe was really needed. This amendment is the 16th, which made Americans pay an income tax. This amendment was ratified on February 3rd, 1913. The idea of taxes has been around for a long time, we have had sales taxes and tariffs, which we relied on for the majority of the federal budget. Then in 1861, Abraham Lincoln decided to institute income taxes for the expenses of the Civil War. This ended in 1872. After this it was put into use one more time in 1890, but to avoid any Supreme Court challenges, Congress proposed this as an amendment in the constitution in 1909, this was finally ratified in 1913. This amendment made sure all U.S. citizens who earned wages paid income taxes. This helped the U.S. because this allowed the U.S. to help others in need and governmental funds. This was the first step to the U.S. actually caring about people who lived in the country.

  41. The early nineteenth century in the United States was not exactly a bright time period for Americans. Imperialism, corruption, and social inequality were everyday occurrences. However, a string of Amendments were the bright spots in such a dark time for the US. The 16th Amendment created much needed income tax laws and the 17th Amendment made the elections of state senators required. The 18th Amendment prohibited the purchase and sale of all alcohol in the US. This Amendment was totally unneeded and was disqualified by the 21st Amendment soon after it was passed. The 18th Amendment proved to be a blip on the radar for the United States government at the time, as the 19th Amendment was passed in 1920, giving women the right to vote at both state and national levels. This Amendment was the most needed by the American people at the time of its passing. Women had been disrespected, mistreated, and abused by men in America for the country’s entire existence. Women were merely expected by their husbands to stay home and raise their children while the husbands would go to work. Though this was expected, women had so much more to offer their country than cooking and cleaning. Since the United States Constitution of 1789 left the subject of suffrage slightly up for interpretation, there was always a chance for women to be able to vote, but the most spirited fight was lead by Susan B. Anthony. The 19th Amendment was needed because women needed their thoughts and ideals to be heard in government, but the Amendment was needed for another reason as well. Women needed to be treated as equals. Blacks, whites, Asians, people of any race or sex needed to be recognized for who they were rather than the color of their skin or whether they were male or female.

  42. In the Progressive Era, I believe that the 17th amendment was the most needed by the people because the people were able to vote the chief executive of the country, but the not the people in the senate. At first, the senators were chosen by the state legislators and this shows how much power is taken from the people of the United States. Having this amendment did help get rid of some power and help with the corruption that it was causing by having the senators picked. Most of the corruption was business giving lots of money to people in the senate so they can pass laws that will eventually make them richer. By having this amendment added to the constitution, it gave power to the people in order to try and help ease the corruption of the very people that are suppose to help them. Also, it helped the senators actually try and do things for the people so they could get re-elected into office. This just made the country a much better place for the people and help ease corruption in the government.

  43. The most important movement in the Progressive Era would have to be the 19th Amendment. This amendment gave women the right to vote, which empowered them more in the United States. At the time women had very little power and were stereotyped. This amendment also worked as a domino affect for women rights as well. One small step for women such as them being able to vote like in the 19th amendment would produce more and more power for women.
Alice Paul was a very influential person towards women getting the rights to vote. She was prisoned and was under extreme scrutiny and brutal torture. She continued to fight for women's rights because she knew it was the "right thing to do." Even though women were just as capable as men they were not getting treating equally and did not have the same opportunities. This amendment also produced many more election votes. With women making up half of the population the votes did not only feature mens views but women's too. This amendment showed women are equal to men and should have the same rights of men because they are following the same laws.

  44. The most important amendment passed during the progressive period was the 19th amendment, which allowed suffrage for any citizen regardless of gender. Before this amendment was passed, the entire female population, including white women, could not vote for their representatives. If only men are allowed to vote, then the women’s voices and ideas for change in the government are incapable of being heard, even if they may be better than any male’s plans. Black men, who white Americans thought were completely inferior because of race, were able to vote decades before any woman could. The 19th amendment may have only directly influenced America by allowing for their suffrage; however, the 19th amendment is also a major stepping stone for the push of equality of men and women not just in terms of voting but also in education and business/work in the decades coming.

  45. During the progressive era, the right to vote for women was the most important amendment. The 15th amendment of 1870 gave men the right to vote regardless the color of their skin, so the next voting amendment to follow was the 19th that would give women the right to vote. This amendment was passed in 1919, and was ratified on August 18, 1920. As Barclay stated, “This Amendment allowed for more opinions to be heard all throughout the country.” People during the progressive era thought women would be more inclined than men to vote. If you are not allowed to vote, no one will know what your opinion is, so by allowing women to vote the country finally got to hear everyones input on who should be in power. After the amendment was put into place, women finally felt that they could remove their own inequalities and be equal to men. Also another huge factor in allowing women to vote was the National Woman's Suffrage Association or (NWSA). They started this movement, which created the drive for every women to be able to vote one day. One of the most impactful woman of this era was Alice Paul and she had a major impact on giving woman confidence and giving them the power to try and vote. This amendment was the most important to me because now everyone seemed to finally be equal and could have the right to vote.

  46. The 19th amendment was a result of 70 years of women’s suffrage. The movement began in the 1840’s and although created in 1919, women did not gain the right to vote until 1920. Before August 18th, 1920, a majority of women were silenced by their role at home which made them inferior to men. If it weren’t for organizations such as National American Woman Suffrage Association and the National Woman’s Party, the movement would not have been as successful, as well as drawn out in length. With more than half of the population silenced, women were unable to change their reputation or have any say in the government matters. This amendment gave women the opportunity to be equal, however even with this contribution to the constitution, women had to play catch up for their years of absence. Without say this is the most important amendment as it meant that the entire country was finally uniting regardless of gender.

  47. The Amendment most needed by the American people was the nineteenth Amendment. Women's right to vote was needed not only to give to women the right, but also to start letting men know during that time period that women were equal to them. Since men always put women below them, this amendment gave women that first push to start working towards obtaining more equal rights for the future. Women worked just as the men worked, had to clean the house, and even had to take care of the kids, so therefore they should be able to vote just as men voted. They no longer had to be silenced by men because for the first time they actually had a say in what was going to change their world. Also, this amendment caused the domino effect for other equal rights for women, unlike the prohibition which was repealed about fourteen years later. So overall, women's right to vote was the first stepping stone to equality for everyone.

  48. The progressive period was a time period dedicated to improving the United States by passing numerous amendments. During the progressive period, I believe the 19th amendment was the most important amendment passed. This amendment entailed, "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States", which meant that all gender could vote. This amendment brought great opportunities and changes for women in the future. Women had not been the only ones to struggle with equality but African Americans had too, during the Reconstruction Age, but had earned the right to vote in the 15th amendment passed in1870. However, at this point in time sexism was still an issue. Men were acting as if they owned women and were their property. Although, women were stuck at home, during World War I they proved they were as capable as men. When women realized this they would for the first time start to develop their own opinions and speak up for themselves. As a result, women such as Alice Paul and Susan B. Anthony began protesting and fighting for women’s rights, and ultimately equality. These influential women helped spread the movement and have the 19th amendment passed. Women’s life experiences would change forever. After this development, the United States finally had all the American people supporting it. The women would participate in the decision making for the government and their crucial opinions would help move the country forward as a whole. Ultimately, The 19th amendment was the most significant because it would be a precursor the valuable contribution of women in our society today and furthermore the United States success.
