  1. In Orleans, Massachusetts, the Fire department is combined with the EMT medical services. The PD has its own department and has three offices around town with one main building right by the middle school. Their motto is "Honored to Serve", and I know a few of the cops fairly well because they come into the surf shop I work in pretty regularly. I know the police too and there are also several women who work there too. Their website also has a bunch of links for helpful tips for dealing with situations like domestic violence and such.

  3. I am from the small town of Winsted, Connecticut. I am also fortunate enough to have had the pleasure of knowing one of the many brave volunteer firefighters from my town through my parents’ work. Peter Toomey has been a good friend of our family since before I even knew him, and I thank him for explaining the workings of the Winsted Volunteer Fire Department.

Our fire station is made up of solely volunteers. This great group of men and women is comprised of 125 members; one chief, one assistant chief, and two deputy chiefs lead members. They are in charge of three firehouses; Station One which houses Engine 2, Tower 1 (Aerial Ladder), Squad 5, and Support Services, Station Two houses Engine 1, and Fire Police, and Station Three houses Engine 3 (the engine that Peter is in charge of driving to emergencies) and Engine 4. Each station is manned by a company, lead by one or two Lieutenants, with companies comprising ten to twenty members each. Each member could be an Interior Firefighter, Exterior Firefighter, an Associate, or an Honorary. These brave men and women respond to calls for motor vehicle accidents, CO (carbon monoxide) calls, hazmat (hazardous materials), and all types fires (structure, car, forest, etc). The Winsted Police Department is in charge of dispatching firefighters when needed. All active firefighter members are issued full turnout gear and a pager to receive the calls. Volunteers also provide mutual aid to other towns when requested.

  4. In Winnetka, Illinois, there is one police station located near the center of town. The Winnetka Police Department is comprised of 27 sworn officers and 9 non-sworn employees. Together they staff the three main divisions within the Department: Administration, Operations, and Administrative Services. Although there are dozens of officers working for the Winnetka PD, after a few years of living there, there is a good chance you get to know at least a couple of them.

  5. In Hagen, Germany we have professional firefighters, volunteers and a youth firefighter organization. There is a main fire station located in Hohenlimburg and many smaller ones throughout the city. Every year the firemen have to partake in specified fitness tests. The youth firemen organization is for 12-18 year olds who are interested in becoming a firefighter. They go to the fire stations once a week and learn about firemen’s life.

The main police station is in the downtown area of the city. Additionally, there is at least one smaller station per district. In Germany most police officers drive Volkswagens and the color of their cars changed from green to blue in 2008. Many people complain about police officers frequently setting up speed traps instead of chasing criminals. Officers in Germany don’t get as much respect as American police officers.

  6. The Aspen Fire Department started in 1881 during the silver boom days in Aspen and now covers 87 square miles of the Pitkin County in Colorado. This area includes many different geographical areas from the downtown Aspen area, to sparse residential neighborhoods, to mountainous terrain. All of these areas must be treated differently in the case of a fire so the fire department is prepared with a range of equipment and training. The members of the fire department are a combination of career firefighters and volunteers.

  7. The New Canaan Fire Company is a group of brave people, dedicated to protecting the town from fire, rescue, and environmental emergencies. They work to minimize fires and property loss through emergency service, education, and community service activities. The company has a combination of paid and volunteer firefighters. Having both paid and volunteer firefighters is economically beneficial, and delivers high quality protection to all of those within the town. Though there is a mix of volunteers and paid firefighters, the department depends a lot on their volunteers, and it is vital that there are a lot of volunteers available. The New Canaan Fire Department has strong cultural values, including respect, integrity, teamwork, enthusiasm, and more.

  8. In Wellington, FL, the Palm Beach County Fire Department takes care of emergencies from Station 27. This department consists of many full-time firefighters, paramedics and EMTs, 19 of which work in Station 27 in 3 different shifts. In This particular station, there are 3 firetrucks to serve the town of Wellington.

  9. The Fire Department (F.D) of Litchfield was founded in 1890 after multiple homes burnt down. As Litchfield is a small town, holding around 8,600 people over the span of 57 square miles, the F.D consists of only volunteer firemen. These volunteers undergo rigorous training to ensure that they are prepared for the job. They play a significant role in the small community; you will find firemen visiting local schools, the green, or at many fundraisers. The community gladly gives back to them, as we all recognize how important their job is. Although they are not paid large numbers on paper, the respect and pride in their job is-- for lack of a better term --priceless.

  10. The Wyckoff, NJ Police Department was founded in 1922 with seven Marshalls and a constable. In 1930 a full time Police Officer was employed, and 1937 an additional officer was employed with six part time officers, along with nine special police officers who were on call. At this time officers during the day would control traffic and at night the officer would inspect stores, banks, and vacant houses. The department became more efficient in the 1940’s with radio police car, also Wyckoff did not have a jail, its prisoners were sent to the adjacent town. In the 40’s and 50’s when my grandpa was young there was only one police car, and when he passed you were free to do what you pleased on the town’s roads. Today there are 23 Police Officers and two special Police offers who are there for 911 calls.

  11. Newburyport is a small coastal city of 17,800 residents in Massachusetts, 35 miles north of Boston. The Police Department headquarters is situated downtown, which is the most densely populated area. In Newburyport we use a system called “Code Red” which is an emergency communication network. Code Red can alert you of critical situations such as an “AMBER ALERT”, an impacting event in the Station Seabrook which is an nuclear power plant located 7 miles outside of Newburyport ect. These alerts are sent to your cell phone as a text message to immediately alert you of any critical situations. However in order to get these messages from Code Red you must sign up for it on the Newburyport Police web page. I’m glad to know that the Police Department and other safety departments in Newburyport have this system in place to ensure the residents safety.

  12. The Indian Hill Rangers was started in 1903 as a non profit organization to protect the residents of Indian Hill. As the Community grew, so did the need for a full time professional staff. In 1929, The Rangers became a professional staff and over the years has increased from 2 police officers to the current staff of 22. The officers are recruited from some of the best police departments in the country. These officers must have served at least ten years in another police department before becoming rangers to ensure that the Indian Hill residents are receiving the best possible protection.

  13. Just like every other police department in the country, Sheffield Police department is devoted to making Sheffield a safe and crimeless town for all of the population. Because of the small population the unit is not very big and really utilizes trusted Sheffield citizens to help fight crime.

  14. In Hargeisa, the Police Department is the most important since some neighborhoods like where I live could be very dangerous especially at night. There are at least five different police stations in Hargeisa since it is a big city and crowded too. Those policemen are so dedicated to keep the city and its people safe. Since there is no emergency number that you can call if you need help, the police have to be in those neighborhoods just incase there is a crime. They walk around those neighborhoods at night to stop any in progress crimes or avoid any from happening. Even though they don’t get paid a lot and certainly don’t get enough respect from the society, I think those men and women are very brave to do their jobs where they put themselves in danger for others all the time.

  15. The New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps (NCVAC) consists entirely of a free, volunteer team of EMT's. The NCVAC has three ambulances and two fly-cars. It was founded in 1975 and offers EMT courses to inquiring employees. There is no hospital in New Canaan, so in most emergencies patients are taken to neighboring Norwalk or Stamford hospitals. New Canaan is a fairly small town, so most people know the public safety officers or have known someones who worked for one of the Departments.

  16. Woodstock, NY is an extremely small town where the fire department, the police department, and town hall are all adjacent to each other in the center of town. The Woodstock Fire Company was officially founded in 1906 and continued to grow to be the Woodstock Fire District that is home to 22 vehicles, 172 volunteers and emergency medical services that serve a 60 square mile area. The fire department serves a large role in the community though events such as dinners and community meetings.

  17. In Framingham, MA, there a multiple different Fire Stations. They are all part of the same department, however the town is to big for a fire truck to go from one side of town to the other. I believe there are three or four different fire houses in Framingham. The Framingham Fire Department is full of dedicated professionals who wish to protect the citizens of Framingham from loss of life and property from the ravages of fire, and to respond in a quick and efficient manner to medical emergencies.

In addition to their duties to respond to fire, the Fire Department also responds to other medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, water problems, and other calls for assistance.

  18. The Canaan Fire Company was organized May 9, 1911. The first equipment consisted of two hose jumpers made from an old parade wagon. In 1927, the firehouse was built. At this point, the Fire Company had 3 motor units with water pumps and booster tanks. They moved in 1975 to a new location in town and have been there until today. There are 40 firefighters and 4 fire police currently working at the Canaan Fire Company. The firehouse also has a Junior Corp for kids between the age of 14 and 18.

Interesting fact: Their third motor unit that they acquired in 1930 is still used today for parades and special occasions.

  19. The fox chapel police are situated 12 miles Norheast of the City of Pittsburgh as part of the Fox Chapel Borough, and serves nearly 8.5 miles of coverage from the Northeast on. These bravehearts go in the line of battle every day to protect and serve the residents of Fox Chapel. Since there is little crime in the neighborhoods, police often spend most of their days either catching kids for driving past curfew or catching kids for lighting fireworks. They also help out in nearby not so nice neighborhoods such as Aspinwall and the Waterworks area. Many police officers could be heard exclusively telling me they love the adrenaline rush that goes into deploying tazers and pepper spray on everyday vigilanties. The acts of valor by these courageous, donut-eating cops are sure to not disappoint, and I am thankful for their efforts.

  20. I live in Wayzata Minnesota and have decided to do some research on the Fire Departments that are around the area. I have learned that overall there are eight large fire departments in Minnesota one of them being in Minneapolis where Wayzata is located in. In Wayzata here has recently been no registered predatory offenders found, there are 49 businesses and buildings that are going into foreclosures, the total crime rating is a 34.00, which is ranked as a A-, and that there are some environmental concerns found in our area. I have learned that most of the fire fighters are volunteers and that most of them do not make a career out of firefighting.

  21. In Canaan, CT. They offer a program for "Junior Firefighters" on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These meetings take place at night time and their agenda ranges from learning how to properly handle a fire, hazardous material drills, proper hose usage, riding in the fire truck, and many other things. My brother has been a part of the junior firefighters group in canaan for a little over a year now, and they have just received radios. They are allowed to respond to fires only if they are with another adult who is a part of the fire company. -Kay Humes

  23. The town of Sheffield Massachusetts founded in 1733, has a small police station

located in the middle of the town. Eric R. Munson III leads this police station. As a

small town there is not many officers but they all are there when the needed time

comes. Sheffield relies on the citizens of the community to help out and work

together to solve crime related problems. The policemen and women also do a lot of

community work with the local schools; there is a strong D. A. R. E program at the

Sheffield Park and they always seem to stop by Mt. Everett for some classes and to

help out when needed. I have never been stopped by a police officer in Sheffield but

I have heard of officers making big arrests in recent years, drug busts and drunk

drivers for example, even in a tiny town like Sheffield.
